Club History
The Club was founded in 1979 as the Italian American Club of Hunterdon County. The club began with 24 male members of Italian descent. The meetings were held at Clinton Point Inn. Vittorio Russo was the first President. The goals of the Club were to preserve Italian heritage and be of service to the community. Originally, women were invited to attend the dinner function but not the business meetings.
In 1981, the Italian American Women’s Auxiliary was established with Diane Lane as its first President. In 1984, Paul Santella and Tom Carocci suggested that the bylaws be changed to incorporate the Women’s Auxiliary into the Italian American Club and to make the membership available to spouses and children. It now became a family Club.
In the early years, the Club had four annual San Gennaro Festivals. The festival included all types of Italian food and pastries, game amusement rides, and an outdoor mass on Sunday morning. A major event and highlight was September 17, 1982 when President Ronald Reagan along with Governor Thomas Kean, Rep. Millicent Fenwick, Reps. James Courter and Marge Roukema came to the festival. Mrs. Sandria De Sapio had the honor of serving the President a bowl of spaghetti. That day, 1,000 of the 6,000 people in attendance were served spaghetti. It was quite a day to remember, along with all the preparations that went before it.
From inception, the Club had family summer picnics and Christmas parties and they continue today. The members attend many events: opera, theater, parades, movies and other activities with Italian themes. Since 1991, the Club has sponsored a Golf Outing for the purpose of raising funds for local charities and scholarships awarded to high school seniors.
